Active listening and mutual understanding
Gaining collaborative insights and alignment from key stakeholders early on in an engagement helps to build interpersonal relationships, investment towards a singular vision, and reinforces a strong foundation. Being transparent about fears and expectations upfront is both beneficial and incredibly cathartic.
Understanding why change is necessary
The initial hypothesis or presenting problem isn't always necessarily the root issue. Understanding wants, needs, desires, and the motivators driving them can help to distinguish what is truly needed vs. what is communicated as wanted. This lens must be applied to both the business and end customers.
Validating audience needs and wants
Once we are confident in our knowledge of our audience's needs and wants, we must then begin to assess and envision what that new experience might look like to ensure that we are aligned with what they truly value. This will determine the difference between a transaction and an experience.
Assessing business readiness
"Changes they are a coming." It's critical to be thinking about the steps that must be taken within the business to ensure success. Process management, dependencies, infrastructure, headcount, etc. all must be evaluated to ensure each part of the organization is ready to manage the change.
